Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation

Back, neck, shoulder, knee and sports problems, and rehabilitation after an operation

Physiotherapy is a department of its own at the Israna campus, with a named consultant and a mobile number the hospital publishes for it. It is the department most patients arrive at last, after the fracture has been set, the joint has been replaced or the stroke has been treated, and it is the one where the function comes back.

Who runs this clinic

Dr Naseeb Sharma is the consultant physiotherapist on the department’s own flyer, and the number printed under his name reaches the department directly rather than the general appointment line — which is how a rehabilitation booking usually gets made, because a session is fitted to the therapist’s list.

What the department treats

The panel below carries the fifteen complaints on the department’s own flyer, translated line for line and in the order it prints them, in Hindi and in English — low back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder problems, knee pain and osteoarthritis, sprains, sports and muscle injuries, heel pain, and posture. Alongside those are the two the department is most often referred for: the joint after an operation, and the limb after a stroke.

How a course starts

The first visit is an assessment: how far the joint moves, how much the muscle holds, what the pain does when you load it, and what the operation note or the scan actually showed. Treatment follows from that rather than from the complaint, which is why two people with “back pain” leave the first session doing different things. Most of the work is hands-on or supervised exercise in the room, and most of the result comes from the part done at home between sessions — a therapist who does not give you exercises is the thing to question, not the department.

Where this department sits

The referrals come from the departments that finish the structural job first. Orthopaedics sends the post-fracture knee and the post-replacement knee; a stroke or a brain injury is stabilised by internal medicine and then worked on here for months; surgery books the breathing and mobilisation work after a big operation; and obstetrics for the back and pelvic pain that outlasts the delivery. Pain that is being treated here and not settling goes back for imaging — digital X-ray and ultrasound are in the same building.

Some things are not a physiotherapy first visit: pain with fever and weight loss, a limb that is suddenly weak or numb, loss of bladder or bowel control, a fall that left you unable to weight-bear, or pain that woke you from sleep and will not settle. Those go to casualty or to the doctor first.

Questions the desk gets asked

No — the department takes its own bookings, and the mobile number on the flyer is published for exactly that. A referral still helps when one exists, because it carries the operation note, the scan and the diagnosis, and a therapist who knows what the surgeon did treats the knee differently from one who is guessing.

Nobody honest can say before the assessment, and a clinic that promises a fixed number before examining you is selling the number, not the result. What the first visit should give you is what is being treated, what is being aimed at, roughly how long that takes for a problem like yours, and how you will both know it is working.

Some treatments are uncomfortable while they are being done, and a stiff shoulder that is being mobilised will ache afterwards. Discomfort that eases as you move is different from pain that makes you guard against it, and the therapist cannot tell the two apart unless you say — so say it in the session rather than at the end of it.

Call the department’s own number, 70828-26381, before travelling. A physiotherapy slot is booked to the therapist’s list rather than to a general clinic window, and the OPD timings page does not cover it.
